Is Mahjong mostly luck… or skill?

This is one of the most common questions we hear — and the answers are always interesting.

When you first start playing, it can feel like everything depends on the tiles you draw. Some hands come together easily, others don’t.

But over time, many players begin to notice something else:

      • Certain decisions lead to better outcomes
      • Some hands feel more “controlled” than others
      • Small choices start to matter more than the draw itself

      So we’re curious:

      What do you think?
Is Mahjong mostly luck, mostly skill… or something in between?

      And more importantly —
Has your answer changed as you’ve played more?

Reply below. We’d love to hear how your perspective has evolved.

Good point Maria! It’s clear that for many of you, the game has shifted from “waiting for a tile” to “making a move.”

In professional circles, players often talk about the 80/20 rule:

          • 20% is Luck: You can’t control the tiles you pull from the wall.

          • 80% is Strategy: You have total control over how you manage your hand and react to the table.

As you play more, the skill isn’t just about building your own hand anymore. It becomes about efficiency and defense. A beginner sees a “bad hand” and waits for luck to change it. A seasoned player sees a “bad hand” and immediately switches to a strategy that keeps their options open while making sure no one else can win.

The biggest shift we see in our students is when they move from “I hope I get this tile” to “I know the probability of getting this tile is low, so I’m changing my shape.” Luck gets you to the table, but skill is what keeps you there.

Was there a specific game or an “ah-ha” moment where you realized your choices were starting to matter more than the draw? We’d love to hear that story!

I used to think Mahjong was almost entirely luck, especially in the beginning. It felt like if I didn’t draw the right tiles, there was nothing I could really do.

But after playing more, I started noticing that some hands went better not because of what I drew, but because of how I reacted. Things like when to commit to a pattern, when to change direction, or even what I choose to discard started to make a difference.

So now I’d say it’s both — luck gives you the situation, but skill determines what you do with it.

I’m definitely still learning, but it feels a lot less random than it did at the start.
